I've really come to love 'cartoonizing' anything and anyone. So anytime I get a chance to do so, I jump on it.
Here yet another work for our dear friend Yogev Gabay.
Brief:
Create a Youtube Cover Image using a specific image of Yogev featuring elements of time and rhythm, like say an hour glass, time signatures etc etc. - And that was pretty much it. Style, composition etc. was up to me. Ah, freedom, a true curse.
Yogev sent over the image he wanted me to use for the cover. And that's where we ran into our first hiccup.
The image quality of both versions that he had were... 'meh'. You see, Youtube's cover dimensions are quite intricate. Since the Youtube App exists is various formats i.e, Mobile App, Desktop function AND smart TV's/Playstation Apps etc. The cover image is actually quite big. I mean 2560x1440. That's mainly for TV's. Then they have various safe zones for mobile and desktop situations, so they recommend keeping the 'important stuff' rather centered.

Anyway. Bad image quality & large cover image dimensions are never a good fit thus leaving me with ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CHOICE (many choices but obviously I'd go for cartoon) to vectorize him yet again.
Our initial image and first edit were taken & created by the amazing Rohith Jayaraman. Stay tuned for more projects with him in le future.

So, my obvious first step here was to throw the image into Illustrator and start vectorizing Yogev.
After having done a bunch of these now I actually completed this one fairly quickly. *pats self on back*
I really liked Rohith's initial edit with the space background, so I decided to stick with it but obviously adapt it to our cartoon style.

From now on I kept the Youtube Guides on so that I could see where I should keep the important things...

I first created a general space color gradient background with a couple of planets and stars.
Okay. Resembles space. Now to filling it up with some of the stuff Yogev wanted. So I added some time signatures, a dali styled clock, some drum sticks and an hour glass. I pretty much had placings for everything in my head already so no need for a sketch on this project.
You must be seeing the things that annoyed my by this point... Yogev's just floating and there's still some empty space at the bottom. How to fill random space in space... ANOTHER GINORMOUS PLANET. I attempted putting Yogev on a stack of books but halfway through decided to ditch that and throw him on an abnormally sized snare drum instead creating our next step.
Pretty close to the finish line I decided to throw in some more space-y elements:
I was pretty happy with the result and decided to test the banner on my YouTube page. And oddly enough Yogev didn't stick out enough for me. So I simply darkened everything else juuust a tad resulting in our final:
I had loads of fun with this one. If you wanna see it in use head on over here to watch some of Yogev's videos on his channel!
